When the West Coast gets hot

A clear, calm guide to heat waves along the U.S. Pacific coast — why a beach town can sit in the 60s while a valley an hour inland crosses 105°F, how official alerts work, and what actually helps.

01 — Definition

What a heat wave is

A heat wave is a stretch of weather that is much hotter than usual for that place, lasting more than a day — often several days. There is no single national temperature that defines one. A 95°F afternoon can be a serious heat wave in Seattle and a fairly ordinary summer day in Palm Springs.

What matters in practice is the combination of:

  • How unusual the heat is for the climate people and buildings are used to.
  • How long it lasts. Risk rises when hot days stack up.
  • How warm the nights stay. If overnight lows remain high, bodies and buildings do not get a recovery period.
  • Who is exposed — outdoor workers, older adults, young children, people without cooling, and people with certain health conditions.

Meteorologists sometimes use statistical thresholds, such as temperatures above a local percentile for a set number of days. Emergency managers care less about the exact academic definition and more about whether the heat is unusual enough, long enough, and widespread enough to make people sick.

Humidity, wind, and sun also change how dangerous a given reading feels. West Coast heat is often drier than heat in the eastern United States, so the air may feel less sticky. Dry heat is still heat. It dehydrates people quickly and can push body temperature up during work or exercise.

02 — Geography and weather

Why the West Coast pattern is distinctive

The Pacific coast is not one climate. On a typical summer afternoon, it can be sweater weather at the beach, the mid-90s in a valley an hour inland, and well over 100°F in a desert basin. That contrast is the signature — California shows it most sharply, and Oregon and Washington have their own coast-versus-interior split.

The ocean and the marine layer

The Pacific off California, Oregon, and Washington is cool. In the warm season, a shallow layer of cool, moist air often sits over the water and slides onshore — the marine layer. It frequently brings low clouds or fog, especially in the morning.

A temperature inversion (warmer air above cooler air) can cap that layer like a lid. When onshore flow is steady, the immediate coast stays mild. When high pressure strengthens, winds turn offshore, or the marine layer is mixed out or shoved back to the shoreline, coastal cities can heat up quickly — including places that rarely do.

Valleys, ranges, and deserts

Mountain ranges run roughly parallel to the coast. They help create a narrow, often cooler coastal strip; hot interior valleys that sit in a bowl (California’s Central Valley is the largest and most populated); and rain-shadow deserts farther inland and to the southeast.

Air that sinks on the inland side of mountains warms and dries. Basins trap heat. Pavement and rooftops add a local warming effect, especially at night.

High pressure and “ridges,” in plain language

A ridge is a bulge of higher atmospheric pressure. When a strong ridge parks over the West, sinking air often clears the skies, onshore flow weakens so the marine layer thins or retreats, and hot air can linger for days.

News coverage sometimes calls a persistent, intense version of this a “heat dome.” That is informal language for a stubborn ridge and the hot air mass under it — not a separate kind of storm. The exact setup differs from event to event.

Offshore wind events (such as Santa Ana winds in Southern California or Diablo winds in the Bay Area) can also shove hot, dry inland air all the way to the coast. Those are a different pattern from a still, sunny high, and they can raise fire danger as well as heat stress.

Uncertainty: Local effects are sharp. County-level headlines often hide large neighborhood differences. This page describes common patterns, not a single machine that produces every West Coast hot spell.

03 — Places

Typical hot spots

These are typical patterns, with California as the main focus. They are not a ranking for any particular day, and they are not a forecast.

Immediate coast

San Diego beaches, the Los Angeles Basin near the ocean, the Central Coast, San Francisco, the North Coast, and the Oregon and Washington shorelines are often the coolest places in a regional heat wave. “Often” is doing a lot of work. When the marine layer fails, these places can still become dangerously hot — especially where air conditioning is uncommon.

California’s Central Valley

Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto, Fresno, Bakersfield, and surrounding farm and city communities routinely see the region’s most persistent triple-digit stretches. The valley is inland, low, and wide. Overnight lows can stay uncomfortable for days.

Inland Southern California

The Inland Empire, the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys, and other basins away from the beach heat up faster than the immediate coast. Dense population means many people are in the heat even when the official “hottest” readings are farther out in the desert.

The deserts

The Mojave, Coachella Valley, Imperial Valley, and similar basins are built for extreme summer heat. Longtime residents are often more practiced at it; visitors and new arrivals often are not. Nighttime cooling can still fail during the worst events.

Interior Pacific Northwest

The Willamette Valley, the Columbia Basin, and areas east of the Cascades can get much hotter than the Oregon or Washington coast. The 2021 Pacific Northwest heat event showed that cities known for mild summers can still see exceptional, dangerous heat when a strong ridge locks in. Many homes there were not built around routine air conditioning.

04 — Official products

How people get alerts

In the United States, public heat alerts typically come from the National Weather Service (NWS). Criteria are not the same everywhere. Each local office sets thresholds that fit its climate. A warning in Portland is not triggered by the same number as a warning in Phoenix or El Centro.

Offices may use temperature, heat index, duration, overnight lows, or a mix. In drier West Coast air, heat-index formulas that assume humidity can be a poor match, so local temperature-based criteria are common. Treat the headline as a local judgment, not a national thermostat.

Lower tier — still serious

Heat Advisory

Conditions will be hot enough to be hazardous, especially for people more sensitive to heat, who work or exercise outdoors, or who lack cooling. Take it seriously. It is not a “minor” all-clear.

Higher tier

Excessive Heat Warning

The NWS expects a more dangerous event: typically hotter, longer, and/or more widespread. People sometimes say “Extreme Heat Warning.” The NWS product name is Excessive Heat Warning. Plan as if the heat can make healthy people ill, not only people already at high risk.

You may also see an Excessive Heat Watch (dangerous heat is possible in the next day or two — a heads-up to get ready). In many western areas, NWS HeatRisk adds a complementary color-coded, health-oriented scale. HeatRisk does not replace the advisory and warning headlines.

How to get them: weather.gov (enter your city or click the map), your local NWS office page, Wireless Emergency Alerts on your phone for the most severe warnings, NOAA Weather Radio, and many local news and utility apps that relay NWS products. This site does not issue alerts.

When in doubt, look up your location on weather.gov rather than relying on a national headline or a social-media screenshot. Wording and thresholds can change; the live NWS product is the authority.

05 — Health

Staying safer in the heat

Heat illness is a medical problem, not a test of toughness. Early signs include heavy sweating or — more dangerously — stopping sweating, cramps, headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and a very high body temperature. Confusion, fainting, a person who cannot drink or stay awake, or skin that is hot and dry or profusely sweating are emergencies. Call 911.

If someone may have heat stroke, call 911, move them to a cooler place, and cool them with water and whatever airflow you have while you wait. Do not delay for a “wait and see.”

Use real cooling

Air conditioning at home, a cooling center, a library, a mall, or a friend or relative’s place. A few hours in the afternoon can lower risk. County public-health sites list cooling centers; availability changes by event.

Drink water

Drink before you feel very thirsty. Go easy on alcohol and very sugary drinks. If a clinician has you on a fluid restriction, follow that advice. Sports drinks can help after hours of heavy sweating; they are not required for sitting indoors.

Check on other people

Neighbors, older relatives, people who live alone, and anyone in a hot apartment. Never leave children, adults who cannot exit, or pets in a parked car. Interior temperatures rise fast, even with a window cracked.

Shift the hard work

Move outdoor work and exercise toward morning or evening when officials say it is safer. Take more breaks. Use shade. Light, loose clothing helps; a hat and sunscreen help in direct sun.

Some heart, blood-pressure, psychiatric, and diuretic medicines affect heat tolerance. That is a question for a clinician or pharmacist, not a website. Wildfire smoke can compound a heat event on the West Coast; follow local air-quality guidance if both are happening at once.

06 — Electricity

Flex Alerts and the grid

A Flex Alert is a request — mainly in California, issued in coordination with the state’s grid operator and utilities — for people to voluntarily use less electricity, especially in the late afternoon and evening when air conditioners are running hard and solar production drops.

Typical asks are modest: raise the thermostat a few degrees if it is safe for the people in the home, delay laundry and dishwashing, turn off unused lights, and shift charging. The details are on the alert itself.

What a Flex Alert is not:

  • It is not an order to shut off medical equipment.
  • It is not the same thing as a rotating outage. An alert means the grid is stressed or expected to be stressed. It does not mean your power will go out.
  • It does not mean you should sit in a dangerously hot room to “help.” Health comes first. Conservation from people who can spare the kilowatts is the point.

Oregon, Washington, and individual utilities sometimes make similar conservation requests under different names. Follow your own utility and state grid operator, not only California headlines.
